As we sail into month 14 of this pandemic, researchers have determined that the population is dealing with emotions and behaviours that require a new descriptor – they call it languishing.
Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. And it might be the dominant emotion of 2021.
It’s been described as the middle child of mental health – it’s not burnout, nor is it depression. It’s what a good portion of our society is feeling today, including many business owners.
Many of our clients have been feeling languished. For good reason. Businesses have closed, to reopen, to then close again. Capacity constraints are still an issue for some, cancellations for others, and any renewed sense of hope is squashed by news reports of new variants, enhanced restrictions and uncertainty with vaccinations.
I’m here to tell you it’s okay. We all feel it. Even the best of us. But as business owners, we have to recharge our batteries, see the positive, and push forward towards our goals and desired outcomes. That doesn’t mean we can’t take a break, have an off day, or feel sluggish at times.
Remind yourself that if you’re feeling that way, so do your employees, your customers, and your vendors. They are all human; are dealing with the same issues and have the same emotions. So be sure to connect with them, ask them how they are, not just by default, but really ask how they are, and is there anything you can do to support them.
And know that the opposite of languish is flourish. And in order to start flourishing, we have to overcome languish. Small wins, that turn our attention and focus to positive outcomes is one way to begin to flourish. So think about the small wins in your business that gradually add up to larger wins that eventually have great impact. By doing so, you will begin to see light at the end of the tunnel, and hopefully soon, start watching the pandemic through your rearview mirror.
And if you’d like to learn how our advisors are working with our clients to support them through these and many other challenges they face, please set up an introductory call. We’d love to hear how you are feeling during this challenging time.
